Trojan: A program that comes in secretly and quietly, but it carries a destructive payload. Trojans often carry programs that allow someone else to have total and complete access to your computer.
Worm: Non−replicating nasty program.
Virus: Replicating program that can seriously damage your machine or allow someone else total control. A "virus" will always spread, normally by email therefore infecting the recipients PC.
Hoax Virus: This generally arrives in form of an email, typically listing a set of instructions, carry these out and it will break you machine. These rely on the end user following the instructions.
Spyware: This is a category rather than one type of program − but they can monitor what you do whilst being on the Internet. It is normally downloaded from a website. It can also be responsible for pop-ups.
Malware: Malicious software, which can include Trojans and viruses.
Phishing: 'Phishing' is an attempt by fraudsters to 'fish' for your banking details. 'Phishing' attempts usually appear as an email appearing to be from your bank. Within the email you are then usually encouraged to click a link to a fraudulent log on page designed to capture your details.
